Investor residence: understand the Active Investor Plus options
On this page
What to check first
- INZ lists a NZ$5 million minimum for Growth and NZ$10 million for Balanced.
- The investment periods are three years for Growth and five for Balanced.
- Check acceptable investments, lawful source of funds, transfer requirements and applicable time in NZ.
Prepare for a useful first conversation
Prepare a high-level source-of-funds timeline, family details and expected travel commitments. Obtain appropriate financial and tax advice alongside immigration advice before investing.
A common question
Does the minimum investment alone secure a visa?
No. You must meet the full category requirements and maintain the required investment and other conditions.
Prepare your application file
- Ownership and source: build a clear record of how the funds were earned or acquired, who owns them and the supporting tax or transaction records.
- Category planning: compare Growth and Balanced investment rules, time commitments and family plans before deciding which route to explore.
- Implementation: identify transfer constraints and the records needed to show that funds remain in acceptable investments.
A point worth checking early
Having sufficient wealth is not the whole assessment. Ownership, lawful source, acceptable investments and ongoing conditions matter. Do not assume every property or fund qualifies.
Growth or Balanced?
Growth starts at NZ$5 million and a three-year investment period; Balanced starts at NZ$10 million and five years. These are starting thresholds, not a complete eligibility assessment. Acceptable investments and time-in-New-Zealand requirements differ.
