Who can sponsor a parent?
An eligible adult child can sponsor alone, with their partner, or with another eligible adult child. Sponsors must meet the residence-history, time-in-NZ and income rules. Check any conditions on their resident visas.
Parents must also meet health, character and English requirements, with an English-tuition option where applicable. Income alone does not establish eligibility. Sponsorship involves obligations lasting 10 years.
EOI first, residence application after invitation
An expression of interest is the first stage, not a visa approval. If invited, prepare the residence application and supporting documents within the deadline in the invitation. Keep contact details current.
Upcoming change — 5 October 2026: INZ has announced a selection model with approximately 90% of EOIs selected in date order and 10% by ballot. The first selection under that model is scheduled for 10 November 2026. This changes selection, not the eligibility requirements. See the dated INZ announcement below.
Our service fees
All amounts below are in New Zealand dollars. Government fees are separate. Confirm the scope and final quote before engaging us.

For two sponsors, each additional parent above two adds $500: three parents $3,500–$4,000; four parents $4,000–$4,500. Ask us for a quote for other combinations.
Sponsor income requirements
For assessment periods ending on or after 30 April 2026, INZ lists these annual taxable-income thresholds. Two-sponsor figures are their combined income.

Which income periods count?
Meet the threshold in two qualifying 12-month periods within the three years before EOI selection. Use the threshold at each period’s end; earlier periods can have different amounts. Joint sponsors use the same periods. Relevant existing parent sponsorships affect the number counted.
Prepare your evidence
INZ counts taxable income recorded by IRD. Self-employed income is assessed by financial year, 1 April–31 March. Prepare IRD income records and confirm sponsor eligibility, not just current salary. Joint sponsors may be an adult child and their partner, or two eligible adult children.

Tell us how many parents you want to sponsor, who the proposed sponsors are and whether any parent sponsorships already exist. We can then discuss which records need reviewing. Do not upload financial or identity documents into the initial enquiry.
This guide concerns the Parent Resident Visa. Parent Retirement is a separate investment-based pathway.
Use the right income period, not just today’s salary
Example: two eligible sponsors supporting two parents have a combined threshold of NZ$182,000 for an assessment period ending on or after 30 April 2026. Income of NZ$100,000 plus NZ$90,000 totals NZ$190,000, above that threshold for that period only.
You still need a second qualifying period, the correct threshold for its end date, eligible IRD-recorded income and all other requirements. Joint sponsors use matching periods. Count any other parents covered by continuing sponsorship obligations.
Prepare the family and income records together
Prepare a family relationship chart, sponsor status and travel history, IRD income summaries and any existing parent sponsorships. Keep both sponsors’ income evidence aligned to the same dates.
